HOW BLUE LIGHT DAMAGES YOUR SKIN

HOW BLUE LIGHT DAMAGES YOUR SKIN

By DR. BARBARA STURM

20th Oct 2020

Skin is more than just a beauty device, and healthy skin is more important to overall health than most people realize. Skin is our body’s largest organ, and it is our armor against the outer world. Skin protects us from pathogens, pollution, UV rays and everything we touch. With lockdown and social distancing restrictions, entire countries are working or studying from home. As the pandemic unfolded, screen time – the time we spend sitting in front of our computers, mobile phones, tablets and flat screen TVs – predictably spiked up to 50% according to Internet service providers. What does that have to do with your skin? All of these digital devices emit High Energy Visible light, or “HEV.”

UV and HEV light absorption into the layers of the skin

UVA and UVB light from the sun penetrates from 290 to 400 nanometers, harming your skin’s health and appearance. Blue HEV light penetrates as deeply as UVA and UVB (at 380 to 500 nanometers) and can be just as damaging to skin, causing oxidative damage to cells. A study by the Journal Of Investigative Dermatology found that all those HEV-induced free radicals destroy the complex cell structures over time, including the skin’s collagen and elastin. HEV light exposure can also cause an inflammatory cascade, making skin prone to premature aging, dryness, impaired skin healing, melasma, sensitivity, wrinkles, uneven tone and texture, as well as sagging.

That means that the damage of HEV exposure is akin to sun exposure. But with sun exposure, the benefits of wearing broad spectrum sun protection are well known. And so are the risks and consequences associated with a lack of sufficient sun protection: cancer and premature aging. Less well known is the imperative that you protect your skin against the effects of HEV light exposure, using daily skincare with ingredient science that blocks and protects against HEV and helps the body adapt to the aftermath of HEV exposure. Dr. Barbara Sturm invented two innovative products that help protect against HEV and other urban pollution; ANTI POLLUTION DROPS and SKIN PROTECTION.

ANTI-POLLUTION DROPS include extracts derived from marine microorganisms that strengthen the skin’s defense against HEV and environmental pollution. Purslane, a potent anti-oxidative plant extract, combats the irritating effects of HEV. The drops contain Cocoa Seed Extract, which builds a protective shield. When used daily, the serum promotes the skin’s natural barrier function.

SKIN PROTECTION is an oral supplement containing five different Adaptogens – powerful compounds long used in Indian and Chinese medicine – that help the skin and our body to adapt to stressful physiological, and chemical reactions. It also contains Ginseng, Vitamin E and Purslane to strengthen the skin’s natural barrier function, combat oxidation, and provide the body with important building blocks for healthy skin.
